KBC’s Ann Kiernan was the ballistics expert appointed by the Coroner at the recent Deepcut Inquest into the death of Pte Cheryl James. Ann brought to the investigation her significant and relevant experience of wounds caused by military rounds. On directions from the Coroner, Ms Kiernan organised and led additional range testing which included bullet fragmentation, soot-deposition pattern assessment and range determination with the SA80 assault rifle and ammunition involved. The case was made difficult by the relative weakness of the evidential historic record of 20 years ago compared with the standard of recording of data and retention of evidence which would be expected today. 109 witnesses were heard during the course of the Inquest, including Ms Kiernan’s conclusions and observations on the ballistics’ evidence.
